आठवीं से दसवीं शताब्दी तक राजस्थान के प्रतिहारों की तुलना में कोई अन्य प्रतापी हिन्दू वंश नहीं रहा। इस राजवंश ने राजस्थान से लेकर बंगाल तक शासन किया। इन राजाओं की कीर्ति गुर्जर प्रदेश (अर्थात् राजस्थान के नागौर जिले में स्थित डीडवाना से लेकर गुजरात तक का क्षेत्र) से विस्तारित हुई, इस कारण इन्हें ‘गुर्जर प्रतिहार’भी कहा जाता है। प्रतिहारों ने बड़ी संख्या में देश के विभिन्न भागों में दुर्गों का निर्माण किया। अब इनके बनाये हुए बहुत कम दुर्ग बचे हैं। वर्तमान में राजस्थान में प्रतिहारों के बनाये हुए तीन दुर्ग मिलते हैं। इनमें से प्रथम दो दुर्ग मण्डोर तथा जालोर का निर्माण सातवीं शताब्दी के आसपास हुआ जबकि राजगढ़ दुर्ग का निर्माण अठारहवीं शताब्दी में एक परिहार सामंत द्वारा किया गया। इस पुस्तक में इन्हीं दुर्गों का वर्णन किया गया है।

जिस समय अरब में इस्लाम आकार ले रहा था, ठीक उसी समय मण्डोर दुर्ग में प्रतिहार साम्राज्य की नींव पड़ रही थी, जो आने वाली दो शताब्दियों तक भारत की रक्षा करने वाले थे। मण्डोर दुर्ग ने भारत वर्ष को एक से बढ़कर एक प्रबल प्रतापी परिहार सम्राट प्रदान किये जिनका राज्य अवंति और कन्नौज तक फैल गया। इस दुर्ग ने प्रतिहारों के साथ मिलकर इस्लाम से सीधी टक्कर ली तथा सदियों तक इस्लाम को भारत से दूर रखने में अपनी एक-एक ईंट लगा दी। पांच शताब्दियों तक मण्डोर अपने शत्रुओं को जीतता रहा और भारत माता की सेवा करता रहा। जब पन्द्रहवीं शताब्दी में राठौड़ इस दुर्ग को छोड़कर मेहरानगढ़ चले गये तो मण्डोर हताश होकर बिखर गया तथा इतिहास के नेपथ्य में चला गया। पढ़िये इस दुर्ग की अद्भुत दुर्ग की अद्भुत गाथा।
